Green Waste Disposal Options in the Matamata-Piako & Hauraki Districts

A big mowing round, a hedge trim, or a proper garden tidy-up all have one thing in common: they generate a surprising amount of green waste. Here's a general look at what to do with it if you're handling a garden job yourself around Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Paeroa or Matamata.

Home composting

Grass clippings, soft prunings and garden waste can often go straight into a home compost system, provided it's not diseased plant material or anything treated with herbicide. This is the simplest option for smaller quantities and doubles as free garden fertiliser down the track.

Council green waste services

Matamata-Piako District Council and Hauraki District Council both run refuse and recycling services with options for green waste — availability and details can change, so it's worth checking current information directly on your local council's website before assuming what's covered.

Transfer stations

For larger volumes — a big hedge trim or a full garden clean-up — local transfer stations are usually the most practical option, generally charging by volume or trailer load. Again, checking current fees and accepted materials directly with the facility saves a wasted trip.

What's usually not accepted as green waste

Treated timber, large tree trunks, waste mixed with soil or rubble, and anything treated with certain chemicals often fall outside standard green waste acceptance. If you're unsure, it's worth a quick call to check before loading up the trailer.

The easier option

If a job's bigger than a home compost bin can handle and a transfer station trip isn't appealing, green waste removal is included as standard with every mowing, hedging and garden job we do — and we also take on standalone removal for waste from jobs people have done themselves. It's often simpler than working out logistics for a one-off load.

See our green waste removal page for what's included, or if it's a commercial-scale clean-up, our commercial waste removal service covers larger volumes from business and rural commercial sites.
