Hedge Trimming 101: When to Cut Common NZ Hedge Varieties
Not all hedges grow — or need trimming — at the same rate. Cutting on the right schedule keeps a hedge dense and healthy, while cutting at the wrong time can mean more frequent trims than necessary, or thin, patchy growth. Here's a general guide to some of the most common hedge varieties around Waikato properties.
Privet
One of the fastest-growing common hedges, privet can put on significant growth through spring and summer and often needs trimming three to four times a year to stay tidy. Left too long between cuts, it quickly loses its shape.
Photinia (Red Robin)
Popular for its bright red new growth, photinia grows quickly in warmer months. Trimming after each flush of new red leaves — usually two to three times a year — keeps that colour display going while maintaining a neat shape.
Buxus (Box hedging)
Slower growing and often used for formal, low borders. Buxus generally needs a light trim two to three times through spring and summer, with a final tidy-up before growth slows in autumn. Avoid heavy cutting in the heat of summer, which can stress the plant.
Griselinia
A common New Zealand native hedge, tough and reasonably fast-growing. Two trims a year — typically late spring and again in late summer — usually keeps it under control.
Conifers (e.g. Leyland Cypress, Macrocarpa)
These grow fast when young and can get away on people quickly if left unchecked, but unlike most hedges, they generally won't regrow from old, bare wood — so cutting too hard, too late, can leave permanent gaps. Regular, moderate trims (two to three times a year) are safer than an aggressive single annual cut.
General rules of thumb
- Trim after a flush of new growth, not before — cutting too early just means cutting again sooner
- Avoid hard cuts into old wood on conifers and other varieties that don't reshoot well
- Badly overgrown hedges are often better brought back gradually over two or three visits, rather than cut hard all at once
- Keep the base slightly wider than the top — this lets light reach the lower branches and stops hedges going bare at the bottom
