Lawn Care Guide

Signs Your Lawn Needs More Than Just a Mow

Regular mowing keeps most lawns looking tidy, but every so often a lawn is trying to tell you something a mow alone won't fix. Here are some of the more common signs it's time for a closer look.

Bare or thinning patches

A patchy lawn is usually a sign of compacted soil, heavy foot traffic, poor drainage, or grass that's simply worn out in that spot. Mowing around a bare patch won't fix it — it typically needs the underlying cause addressed and some overseeding to fill back in.

Moss taking over

Moss usually moves in where grass is struggling — often in shaded, damp, or compacted areas where the lawn itself isn't thick enough to outcompete it. A quick surface treatment might knock it back temporarily, but it tends to return unless the underlying shade, drainage or soil condition is addressed.

Water pooling after rain

If parts of the lawn stay soggy well after everywhere else has dried out, that's a drainage issue rather than a mowing one. Left unaddressed, it usually gets worse over time and can lead to the kind of dieback that turns into bare patches.

Scalped, uneven cutting

A lawn that looks scalped in places and shaggy in others is often a sign of an uneven surface rather than a mowing problem — bumps, dips, or old settling in the ground affecting how evenly a mower can cut. This is worth addressing directly rather than just mowing shorter to compensate.

Weeds outcompeting the grass

The occasional weed is normal. Widespread weeds crowding out the actual grass usually means the lawn itself isn't dense or healthy enough to hold its own — which points back to soil condition, mowing height, or watering rather than something a single mow will resolve.

What to do about it

Most of these issues are manageable once identified — they just need more than the standard mowing round to fix properly. If your lawn's showing any of the above, our garden maintenance service covers the broader work beyond mowing, or get in touch and we'll take a look and let you know honestly what it actually needs.
